2.2.2 Marking of Existing Towed Agricultural Implements

    Slow-Moving Vehicle Emblem

If a towed implement impairs the visibility of the SMV emblem on the towing vehicle (FIGURE 6) or extends more than 10 m (33 ft.) behind the hitch point (as in FIGURE 8),

the implement must have its own SMV emblem, which is clearly visible to the driver of a vehicle approaching from the rear. The SMV emblem is mounted with the point of the triangle upward, perpendicular to the direction of travel, and visible from the rear. The sign is displayed as near to the rear and centred, or as near to the left of centre of the vehicle or equipment as practicable. It is located between 0.6 to 1.8 m (2 to 6 ft.) above the ground measured from the lower edge of the emblem.

FIGURE 6. Towed equipment must have its own SMV emblem if the visibility of the SMV on the towing vehicle is impaired.

    PAMI Recommendation:
Any equipment, regardless of size, that obscures markings on the towing vehicle should have its own markings and SMV emblem.

    Reflectors

If your implement extends more than 1.2 m (4 ft.) to the left of the centre of the towing vehicle,

the implement must have at least one amber reflector visible from the front. This reflector should be mounted as close as practicable to the extreme left projection of the implement (FIGURE 7).

FIGURE 7. At least one amber reflector visible from the front is required on equipment that extends more than 1.2 m (4 ft.) to the left of centre of the towing vehicle. For increased visibility, also attach an amber reflector to the right side.

If your implement extends more than 10 m (33 ft.) behind the hitch point of the towing vehicle,

the implement must have amber reflectors visible from the left and right sides. The reflectors must be spaced at a distance of no more than 5 m (16.4 ft.) apart on both sides, as measured from the transport hitch point. One reflector on each side must be mounted as close as practicable to the rear of the implement (FIGURE 8).

FIGURE 8. On long equipment, space amber reflectors no more than 5 m (16.4 ft.) apart on both sides, as measured from the transport hitch point.

If your implement extends more than 1.2 m (4 ft.) to the right or left of the centre line of the towing vehicle (FIGURE 9) or more than 1.2 m (4 ft.) behind the hitch point of the towing vehicle (as in FIGURE 8),

the implement must have at least two red reflectors visible to the rear and mounted as close as practicable to the extreme right and left projections of the implement.

FIGURE 9. At least two red reflectors visible from the rear are required on equipment that extends more than 1.2 m (4 ft.) to the left of centre of the towing vehicle. They should be mounted as close as practicable to the extreme right and left projections of the implement.

    PAMI Recommendation:
To ensure the visibility of your equipment regardless of the size of the towing vehicle, use red reflectors spaced at not more than 1.83 m (6 ft.) across the rear width of the machine. Outermost reflectors should be within 400 mm (16 in.) of extremities. An SMV emblem can be considered as one reflector when marking the rear width of a machine.

Use additional amber reflectors to mark the front width of a machine. These reflectors should also be spaced not more than 1.83 m (6 ft.) across the front width portions of a machine not blocked by the towing vehicle. Outermost reflectors should be within 400 mm (16 in.) of extremities.

    Tip:

For maximum visibility, clean your reflectors and lamps before traveling on public roads.

    Flags

If an implement is over 4 m (13 ft.) wide, extends more than 2 m (79 in.) to the left or right of the centre line of the towing vehicle and the width or extension of the implement extends beyond the left or right extremity of the towing vehicle, and has no flashing extremity lights within 400 mm (16 in.) of its outermost extremities, or extends more than 10 m (33 ft.) behind the hitch point of the towing vehicle,

then for daytime travel only, coloured fluorescent flags must be securely attached to the outermost extremities of the implement (FIGURE 10). The flags must have an area not less than 0.2 m² (320 in.²) (FIGURE 4) and be displayed such that their full area is visible to a driver in another vehicle approaching from the front or rear (FIGURE 11).
Recommended sizes for flags are 500 X 400 mm (20 X 16 in.) or 450 X 450 mm (18 X 18 in.). Suggested colours for flags are orange or red.

FIGURE 10. For daytime travel only, flags can mark extremities when there are no flashing extremity warning lamps.

FIGURE 11. Flags must be displayed so that their full area is visible to a person in another vehicle approaching from the front or rear. Supporting the entire width of the flag from a rigid support (such as a stiff wire) can help ensure the flag hangs so that it is displayed for maximum visibility.
