2.2.1 Marking of Existing Tractors and Self-Propelled Equipment
2.2.1 Marking of Existing Tractors and Self-Propelled Equipment
For your convenience, a detailed point-by-point summary of Section 2 has been included in Appendix 5.
Daytime is defined by the Lighting and Marking Regulation as the period that starts 1/2 hour after sunrise and ends immediately before 1/2 hour before sunset. However, when weather conditions (such as snow, rain, fog) do not allow enough light to clearly see a person at a distance of 60 m (195 ft.), then equipment must meet the requirements for nighttime conditions (see NIGHTTIME TRAVEL, MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS, Section 2.3). See the glossary in Appendix 2 for a definition of nighttime.
Operators must have a Slow-Moving Vehicle (SMV) emblem securely mounted at the centre or to the left of centre of the rear of the machine, and be clearly visible to the rear of the machine (FIGURE 2). The SMV emblem is mounted with the point of the triangle upward, perpendicular to the direction of travel, and visible from the rear. The sign is displayed as near to the rear and centred, or as near to the left of centre of the vehicle or equipment as practicable. It is located between 0.6 to 1.8 m (2 to 6 ft.) above the ground measured from the lower edge of the emblem.

At least two red reflectors visible from the rear are required. These reflectors must be mounted as close as practicable to the extreme left and right projections of the machine. The reflectors can be part of lensing in tail lamps (FIGURE 2). Reflectors that are part of lensing in tail lamps must comply with SAE Standard J594.
Reflective material must be visible at night from distances within 183 m (600 ft.) when directly exposed to the lower light beam of headlamps. Reflective material must meet the durability requirements specified in ANSI/ASAE Standard S276 (Slow-Moving Vehicle Identification Emblem). Your supplier can ensure that components they sell meet the requirements of the standards listed.
If the tractor or self-propelled implement is over 4 m (13 ft.) wide, and has no flashing extremity warning lights within 400 mm (16 in.) of its outermost extremities, then coloured fluorescent flags must mark the outermost lateral extremities of the implement (FIGURE 3) for daytime travel.
| FIGURE 3. For daytime travel only, flags can mark extremities where there are no flashing extremity warning lamps. |

The flags must have an area of not less than 0.2 m² (320 in.²) (FIGURE 4) and be displayed such that their full area is visible to the driver in another vehicle approaching from the front or rear (FIGURE 5). Recommended sizes for flags are 500 X 400 mm (20 X 16 in.) or 450 X 450 mm (18 X 18 in.). Suggested colours for flags are orange or red.
Superior grade reflective tapes offer better visibility, are more durable, and less susceptible to damage than reflective lenses in lamp fixtures. Such reflective tapes are also known as retroreflective tapes or conspicuity tapes. |
